DGSM yourChoice

DGSM yourChoice (previously known as DGS Mencap) is a registered charity and an affiliation of Royal Mencap Society. DGSM yourChoice supports over three hundred people with learning disabilities in North Kent and Medway. Many people with learning disabilities experience loneliness and a sense of isolation from wider society. DGSM yourChoice works hard to eliminate this therefore encouraging a fully inclusive community. The charity focuses on enabling people with learning disabilities to develop self fulfillment and independence.

To achieve this, DGSM yourChoice runs many services and projects. These include residential care, independent living schemes, domiciliary care, training, employment, day services, a Community Access Project, drama, music, dance, exercise, leisure activities and even a nightclub! We are also a source of information and advice for people with learning disabilities, their families and carers. The charity has exciting volunteer opportunities ranging from helping at a fundraising event to befriending someone with a learning disability. DGSM yourChoice is an entirely separate entity to Royal Mencap Society and receives no funding from the national body. In fact many projects are funded entirely by the generosity of donations and grants.

Sea Cadets

Dartford & Crayford Sea Cadets

Dartford & Crayford Sea Cadets are a small local charity who are helping young people towards responsible adulthood and to encourage them to reach their potential by developing valuable personal attributes and high standards of conduct, using a nautical theme based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy.

We provide benefit to the local community by providing local children with a constructive outlet for their energy and whilst also providing them with real qualifications, skills and experiences they will use throughout their lives. The unit also encourages, and has considerable success with, children with severe learning difficulties, children who are from the care system or disadvantaged backgrounds, and children who are disabled.

The Unit has been providing Sailing, Power Boating, Canoeing, Orienteering, Expedition Leadership, Seamanship, Navigation, Physical Training, Communications, Drill, Cook Steward, Leadership and First Aid training and assessments, at cost, for a number of years. Our membership has now grown to over 40 children from the local community who attend on a regular basis and we have plans to increase this to around 60 over the coming year.
